About > Membership > Benefits >Types of
membership Everyone wants to know, "what's in it for me?" Social Events We are a very active organization; there seems to always be something going on. ViNOs, parties, picnics, paintball wars, road trips, ballgames, you name it! Whether you're "married with children" or playing the field, we've got something going on for you. Organized Athletics Being ex-military, the Vets Club likes to stay active and take advantage of many sporting events around NIU and DeKalb, including intramurals, Spring Fest, Homecoming, and park district leagues. Our members -- like you -- decide which activities we participate in. In fact, we like sports so much that the Vets Club has established some traditions, such as our annual Toilet Bowl (football) and Bowling Bowl (bowling) inter-service competitions -- where it's Army/Air Force vs. Navy/Marines for bragging rights and the trophies. Service Events The Veterans Club takes a lot of pride in serving the community. Even with our busy schedules, we try to schedule at least one service activity each semester. Examples of service projects that we have hosted or taken part in over the past few years include the USMC Toys for Tots program, the Salvation Army's Adopt-a-Family program, NIVAC's Top of Illinois Stand Down for homeless veterans, retirement home visits, and volunteering with the Traveling Vietnam Wall Memorial. We are always open to suggestions for projects and always looking for volunteers to lead projects or just help out. Leadership Opportunities All active members are eligible to hold Executive Board positions: president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, or sergeant-at-arms. Additionally, the Vets Club is always looking for motivated members to lead or serve on various committees that oversee special events, fund raising, service events, activities, athletics, or whatever else comes up. There can never be enough members willing to help out. The bigger we are the more there is to do. Awards Recognition of service is important to us. That's why the NIU Veterans Club recognizes the contributions of its members who have worked hard to help make this a great organization. Annually, one active member is selected by the Executive Board to receive the Albert S. King Leadership Award, named after a Vets Club legend and former faculty advisor. The recipient of this award will have shown uncommon dedication and esprit-de-corps. Other awards are presented to deserving members based on their significant contributions, such as Certificates of Appreciation, Outstanding Veteran awards, and others. Awards are always presented publicly because they represent a way of showing appreciation for hard work and commitment. Recipients should always be proud to include any award presented by the NIU Veterans Club on their resumes. VetNet One of our most prominent philosophies is "Vets
helping Vets". In keeping with this belief, you will always find members
willing to assist each other, whether helping to fix a car, give a ride
somewhere, or tutor in calculus. Intangibles Aside from all of the tangible benefits, you will
find a strong bond among our members. Vets Club members have all served in
the armed forces. We have a characteristic that other students at NIU
don't have. Chances are pretty good that you'll form some life-long
friendships here, and you'll always have a reason to visit NIU for
Homecoming every October. Academics are very important, but so is having
some fun and making some lasting memories of your college days. The NIU
Veterans Club gives you every opportunity to do both. |
