About > History

The Veterans Club is the oldest surviving student organization on the campus of Northern Illinois University. Our roots date back to 1954, when NIU was a teaching college. A group of proud veterans returned from the Korean peninsula and looked to each other for support. The rest is, well, history.

The Vets Club is responsible for dedicating the Veterans Memorial on the NIU campus.

Additionally, the Vets Club history includes Spring Mete, the Toilet Bowl, Bowling Bowl, and coining the term XGI (read: ex-G.I.).
