Recap: Veterans Day
Ceremony
(11/11/06) On Friday, November 10, the NIU Veterans Club hosted its
annual Veterans Day ceremony at the NIU Veterans Memorial on the Northern
Illinois University campus in DeKalb. It was a cold and blustery day, but
attendance was stronger than the wind. A number of guest speakers provided
moving oratory and the NIU ROTC provided a terrific color and honor guard.
Vets Club secretary Jennifer Webster sang the National Anthem and alum Mark
Mueller led the rededication of the NIU Veterans Memorial in recognition of
its 50th anniversary.
Recap: NIU Homecoming
2006
(10/22/06) NIU celebrated its 100th Homecoming on Saturday, October 21.
The NIU Veterans Club hosted is annual tailgating extravaganza that was
enjoyed by an estimated 80 alumni, family and friends - including alumni
from all eras who came from as far away as Idaho and our nation's capital.
Tailgating moved back to the familiar east side of Huskie Stadium, where
tailgaters enjoyed an abundance of food and drink. The Huskie football team
won a close call against Temple, and star running back Garrett Wolfe was
held to a very sub par day.
Vote: NIU's Garrett Wolfe
for Heisman
(10/2/06) NIU's stud running back needs you support. Vote for Wolfe for
Heisman Trophy candidate. After five games this season, Wolfe has rushed for
1,181 yards and has scored 11 touchdowns. Against #1 ranked Ohio State in
the opening game Wolfe gained 285 all-purpose yards and scored a touchdown.

Go Get 'Em LT John Nevenhoven
(6/12/06) Alum John Nevenhoven (LTjg, USN) was recalled to active duty
in March 2006 and was deployed to Afghanistan in June 2006. According to
Aaron Kozak, John made it safely to the area and they hope to get together
for the first ever NIU Vets Club reunion in a combat zone. John has been
entrusted as a maintenance company commander.
NIU Homecoming 2006
(6/2/06) NIU's annual Homecoming will occur this year on October 21.
Look forward to some serious tailgating, lots of friends, lots of food, lots
of drink, and loads of fun. As usual, just look for the Vets Club tent in
the Tent-a-Gate area. Be sure to make your hotel arrangements EARLY.

End of Semester BBQ
Was a huge success! I believe we even had one new
guy and three alum show up. We bid the semester farewell at Rick
Knutson's house on May 4th. There was football, cards, food, beer and
tons of fun. Thanks to Rick for hosting!

Go Get 'Em Captain Kozak
(2/9/06) U.S Army Captain and Vets Club alumn Aaron Kozak is headed
back to the Middle East to continue the war on terror. Kozak is a member of
the 10th Mountain Division, who is planning a deployment later this month.
This will be Kozak's second tour "over there", having helped spearhead the
assault on Saddam in Iraq as a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. This
time around Kozak will bring the War to al-Qaeda. Finding Osama may prove to
be harder than finding one of Willy Wonka's golden tickets, but Aaron's a
lucky guy and might just put an end to this whole thing. Keep up with
Kozak's adventures on Kozak's Blog - coming soon to this website!
Army Flushed in Toilet Bowl
(2/8/06) The combined might of the Marines / Navy / Air Force team
took down the reigning champ Army team in the 2006 Toilet Bowl inter-service
flag football game. This year's rendition of the Vets Club tradition took
place just outside of NIU Huskie Stadium in good weather conditions. One
active Vets Club member on the Army team gave it his all, including leaving
his lunch on the playing field, but it just wasn't enough. Maybe next year,
heroes. Following the game, the Vets Club and friends gathered to watch the
Super Bowl at alum and faculty advisor Jon Luhuta's home in DeKalb.
Congrats Newest Alums
(1/15/06) Congratulations to our two newest alumni, Andrew Fish and Bill
Frederickson. Both veterans graduated this past Fall semester from NIU. We
wish them the very best of luck in their futures. Stay in touch, guys!
